Bisi Mawuton Padonu, better known in the event world as BusyBee, talks passionately about her journey into the world of Events and Planning. Here she shares her journey from Chemical and Polymer Engineering to Event Planning with Tkbesh!
Tkbesh! : The name Padonu sounds more of an egu name:
Bisi Padonu: Yes it is from Badagry Local Government of Lagos State.
Tkbesh! : Can you briefly tell us your educational background?
Bisi Padonu: I studied Chemical Engineering in Lagos State University, Epe, also a Goldman Sachs Scholar from the prestigious Pan-African University and I have undergone several training at the Covenant Capital, Faith Foundation, Albert and Benjamin Ross Project Management, NI M, LEAP Africa, and Rise Business Academy.
Tkbesh! : Being an Engineer turned Event Planner; at what point did you realize that event planning is your calling?
Bisi Padonu: I have always had good administrative/organizational skills. I got into event management during my students’ Industrial Training, working on a part-time basis with an event management firm; that was when i uncovered my passion for the business.
Tkbesh!: Ok. So how did the name BusyBee evolve?
Bisi Padonu: Uuhhhh! Actually I’ve always been as busy as a bee, always been on the move so at the point of finding a good name that will stick to mind, i thought of the bee known for its social organization and being “busy” as pronounced /bizi/ emphasizes care, thoroughness, diligence. All these are qualities found in me.
Tkbesh! : When did the big break come for you as an event planner?
Bisi Padonu: April 2000 when I handled my classmate’s wedding and we pulled it off exceptionally well. It was at this point that people began to recognize my competence
Tkbesh! : With the calibre of clientele you have, you have really done well for yourself, any secret behind this?
Bisi Padonu: Ehhmmm! God, focus, passion, support from loved ones, and the “BusyBee” personal touch
Tkbesh! : Can we go personal a little, (laughing out), where do you worship?
Bisi Padonu: I attend Covenant Christian Centre headed by Poju Oyemade
Tkbesh! : You have trained quite number of people, tell us about this…
Bisi Padonu: Our platform, BusyBee Academy has empowered over 27 participant run their business in the area of event management and decorations
Tkbesh! : Who are the people you admire
Bisi Padonu: In the industry, Ibidun Ighodalo of Elizabeth R events, Yewande Zaccheus of Eventful and of course my mum, Mrs E.U Padonu who has been very supportive
Tkbesh! : Wow! So who is one person that you can name, who has had the greatest influence in your life?
Bisi Padonu: Hmmnn! My Pastor, Poju Oyemade of Covenant Christian Centre. I have been able to apply his teaching into my business
Tkbesh! : You’re all over in the media, how have you been managing stardom?
Bisi Padonu : Aaahh! We are trying and I’m still the same Busy Padonu (the girl next door)
Tkbesh! : We know many public faces try to keep one thing to themselves, their relationship, Are you single or in a relationship?
Bisi Padonu: I’m in a relationship
Bisi Padonu: Hmmnn! (chuckles) I would love to have an elaborate and classy wedding where i have all my family and friends come share the long awaited day
Tkbesh! : How soon are we hearing the wedding bells?
Bisi Padonu: It’s in the pipeline (lips sealed)
Tkbesh! : What’s your typical day like?
Bisi Padonu: Phew!! I resume at work at 10 and don’t leave till 6pm. From meetings with clients, training with student, to receiving visitors, it’s a busy day
Tkbesh! : What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs who look up to you as a mentor?
Bisi Padonu: The key things are discover your strength, passion, get skilled in that area of interest, the need for focus, determination, consistency and diligence in one’s choice of business.
Tkbesh! : Any Final words from you?
Bisi Padonu: Be consistent at what you do and aspire to become a master in it.
